Maxie is a spirited young lady, who, Just like any 20 years old, ready to finally make her dreams come true and become a doctor – except the world she lives in isn’t very appreciative of a young lady’s academic ambitions. But that’s not a problem! Thanks to her energetic, optimistic, adventurous nature she still believes that anything is possible if you just put your mind to it and she’s ready to work day and night to prove herself! But her naivite and need for recognition is a perfect recepie for some ugly life lessons.
Sometimes life is just not going to be fair, some mistakes just cannot be fixed, some people will not care about her efforts to change their minds and no hard work and positive thinking can change that. So… what then? Lucky for Maxie, she’s got a mentor who can help her when she seems to run out of answers – well, in his own peculiar ways anyway…
Arley is one of those lucky bastards who does what he likes and likes what he does. He is a veterinary pathologist and supernatural investigator, researching cases no repurtable scientist whould take on. And thanks to his endless curiosity and fascination with anything weird and out of the ordinary (and the fact that he’s infinitely more found of animals than people…). he’s pretty good at it!
But despite all his passion and dedication, thanks to a mysterious incident with the university, he has become the prickly recluse he is now, who is just a little too blunt, a little too depressed, and sometimes a little too drunk to prove anything to anyone anymore – or at least until Maxie end up in his practice. Her enthusiasm for learning rekindles his passion for teaching. But if he really wants to be able to help her, oooh, he finally has to deal with soooo many things he just conveniently avoided for so long…
Levi is a walking contradiction and if anyone is painfully aware of it, it’s he himself.
He is half vampire and half lidérc* and although his peculiar heritage makes him a uniquely powerful supernatural creature in his own right, he happens to suck at all the key traits that make a “true” vampire or lidérc by the books.
He moved to the city to finally blend in just to immediately run into the only person who would recognize him and would be very annoying about it – Arley.
But despite all this they did end up as some sort of best friends. Levi confident, down to earth, snappy side and can handle Arley even at his worst and his playful, easygoing attitude keeps him from completely burying himself in his work and self-pity.
Dr. Emory Breslin-Ridley is a charming, elegant, diplomatic, cold and ruthless, manipulator. He is the head of the department of Veterinary Science of the Breslin-Ridley University, although not entirely out of his own volition.
He just happens to be the last one in the long line of generations of the prestigious founding family of the university who traditionally fill this role – a crippling expectation, not only because it exceeds his medical talent, but could potentially cost him his life, if he’s not careful.
But Ridley knows exactly how dangerous the truth can be, so with him, everything is always under control! Because there isn’t really anything left that he wouldn’t do to get it back, if he felt like this control is slipping out of his hands.
So now he’s really, really not happy to see Arley around the university again.
